Fall Home Tour Ideas

I find that there is a process that goes along with decorating for a season, holiday, etc. For me it generally starts with an inspirational piece and this year was no exception.  This Fall was inspired by the kitchen copper I have accumulated from my parents over the years. There is something special about the color, simplicity, and history of the pieces. I actually enjoy cleaning it! There is great satisfaction in seeing something go from dull to stunning with not much effort.

If you have visited any of my previous home tours you know that I always like to start my decorating on the outside. I believe the elements I choose should begin there and set the tone for what you will be greeted with when you walk inside.

Here you see the copper tone pop on the corn glittered with gold on the front door. I also chose to work with purples, greens and whites this year. I was so excited and surprised to walk into a sea of white pumpkins at my local nursery last week. I didn’t think I would be able to find real pumpkins this early!

Truth be told, I have an amazing mother who has taught me so much about taking care of a home. I told her my thoughts on wanting to use gold glitter on corn and walnuts for my fall decor and she surprised my by doing it herself. She truly is the best!

You are greeted with the copper as soon as you enter the kitchen. I adore it so much that I may keep it up all year round!

Food is something else I like to use to decorate my home when possible. The colors are in such a pure and natural state that you truly can not go wrong with them. There is also so much variety to choose from, it’s inexpensive and you can eat it. You can’t go wrong!

You can find the glitter covered walnuts my mom made me in the birds nest.  We found the nest in the backyard a few years ago. I like to place different items in it for decoration. Before the walnuts made it in I had a pie bird sitting displayed in it.

Simply said, I love to fill my kitchen with meaningful pieces. I am in this space a lot and I want to enjoy it when I am in here.

My fall mantle was fairly simple. I took some branches from the yard for some height and added some brass and copper tone accents. I loved the gold edges of the pages of the books.  I decided to turne them around, so we could appreciate the color.IMG_2778

My mudroom received a little fall detail with the addition of gold glittered pumpkins!

Feel Home: Creating a Timeless Feeling Home

We all have the same questions when it comes to designing our homes. Where do I begin? Is this really me or am I making this decision because it is the latest trend? Am I still going to like this look six months from now? Whether you are the everyday home designer or working with a professional, the choices you make for your timeless home need to be made with intention. This course will guide you through the process and teach you the framework that I use to create a timeless home with my clients. We will create storyboards, discover the language for a timeless home (hint, it has a lot to do with your personality), and learn the exact design elements that create a timeless feeling. You will learn by doing. As a result, making design decisions for your timeless home will be easier. You will be making your decisions with intention and confidence rather than because you saw it in the latest issue of a favorite magazine. This course will teach you not just the what, but the how and why behind creating a timeless feeling in your home.

Thanksgiving Tablescape Tour

My inspiration for this project came from a visit to Belgium a few years ago. My father was born and raised in Holland and his family and many friends still live in the area. We stayed with some long time friends of ours in Belgium. One morning we sat down to breakfast and before us sat a table piled high with wonderful breads and rolls. They were not in baskets or on platters, but sat directly on the table. I was drawn to this tablescape and the mood that it evoked. I wanted to create that same feeling for my own Thanksgiving table. Here is my own version.

IMG_0398

The bread is a part of the meal and encourages people to take what they want. I think the table setting feels real. It welcomes people to sit down and enjoy the experience of family, friends, and food.

There is a lot of bread of course, but mixed within are other elements that I believe make it feel real. The corn in the center is glittered in gold and repeated on the walnuts that sit on the napkins. The brass candlesticks and gold ribbon compliment this same color palette.

IMG_0416

The herbs were something I wanted to incorporate because put simply I love them! I love how they look, but most of all I love how they smell. Sense can be another way to add warmth in my opinion.  I planted thyme in the urns,  rosemary is tucked in with the utensils that sit on the plates, the plant on the island is a rosemary topiary, and the round bread on the table are rosemary loaves.

IMG_0418

You will find silver and grey in many pieces. The tablecloth and napkins are obviously in the grey family. The rim of the china, the cake stand, butter dish, silverware, and  even the chairs all have some tone of silver in them.

IMG_4459

My tablescape is a “tip of the hat” to the Thanksgiving holiday. To me that makes it feel more authentic and not forced.  I spent approximately $20 on the bread and everything else I already owned.

My “something to try” tip is to create a beverage station. I didn’t want to clutter the table too much, so I decided to place the water pitcher and glasses on a nearby marble table. Now everyone can help themselves!
