“How To” Add Authenticity with Marble (inexpensively)

My father is from Holland, so after moving to the US we would travel back quite often. We would visit family, beautiful shops, and restaurants while we were there. One thing I took notice of even as a young child was the attention to detail. The detail was evident in the simple everyday events. If you bought a good from a shop, even as small as a postcard, it would be wrapped beautifully in its paper and string. My parents’ coffee in a cafe would be served in a coffee cup where a rounded paper sat on top of the saucer to catch any spills.  A small sweet treat would be served as well, taking its place on the saucer next to the coffee. It was always an experience that evoked a sense of timelessness. Maybe it was the history, maybe it was my youth, or maybe it was the materials and architecture that was used to make these spaces.

There is Beauty in Simplicity

One material that I found in many of the places we visited was marble. The timeless and classic feeling marble evoked spoke to you just by being. It created a sense of elegance in an atmosphere that I truly cherished and still do.

I love to find different ways to incorporate marble into my home and this was one that I wanted to share with you. Remember it is about mixing pieces together. Whether it’s from a chain store, Goodwill, or your grandmother you mix to create an authentic space. I hope you find the project inspiring and simple to achieve in your own home.

A Kitchen Trivet

Tools

1. Small felt pads

2. Marble Subway tile

*These tiles came in a set of 7 or 8 for around $9.00 at a home improvement store

Method…short and sweet!

Turn the tile over and place a felt piece in each corner. This will help prevent it from leaving any marks on the surface you are placing it on.

Once you have all corners covered, it is ready to enjoy in a variety of ways! You can use them to display kitchen essentials, such as olive oil and salt and pepper shakers. IMG_0325

Another thought is to place a few side by side and place tea lights or pillar candles on them. Line them down the center of your table for a simple and classic display.

“How To” Make Your House A Home

[jetpack_subscription_form]

I honestly believe that the reason as to why you are attracted to my  home is the feeling you get from it. It speaks to you on more of an emotional level. Yes, you like the style or appearance of my home, the subway tile, lighting, etc., but I think it is more than that. I want this blog to teach you “How To” make the feeling you want in your own home.

I want to write the “design book” that I wanted myself when we bought our home almost sixteen years ago. The “How To” guide that consists of the tools needed to make intentional decisions. “How To” information and tools that you can easily understand and execute in your own home. I am a part of my own audience, so I believe I know your wants and needs.

You are going to fall into one of two categories. The first is what I am coining the “everyday home designer” (think of this as the equivalent to the “everyday home cook”). You will either be doing projects yourself or hiring out, but without the help of a designer. The second category is the person who is or will be working with a professional designer. Whichever category fits you best, this process will work for you. You have the same goal in mind, to make a home that tells your story and that of your home.

This is the element that is missing in the home design industry. The actual tools needed to make intentional decisions for your home. It is okay to feel uninformed and unsure, but it really is easier than you may think. Knowledge is power and that is what I want this blog to provide you with, the knowledge to make your house your home.

How are we going to accomplish this you ask? Well, it starts with focus and a little bit of work on both our parts. Stay tuned!
