“How To” Make Your House A Home

[jetpack_subscription_form]

I honestly believe that the reason as to why you are attracted to my  home is the feeling you get from it. It speaks to you on more of an emotional level. Yes, you like the style or appearance of my home, the subway tile, lighting, etc., but I think it is more than that. I want this blog to teach you “How To” make the feeling you want in your own home.

I want to write the “design book” that I wanted myself when we bought our home almost sixteen years ago. The “How To” guide that consists of the tools needed to make intentional decisions. “How To” information and tools that you can easily understand and execute in your own home. I am a part of my own audience, so I believe I know your wants and needs.

You are going to fall into one of two categories. The first is what I am coining the “everyday home designer” (think of this as the equivalent to the “everyday home cook”). You will either be doing projects yourself or hiring out, but without the help of a designer. The second category is the person who is or will be working with a professional designer. Whichever category fits you best, this process will work for you. You have the same goal in mind, to make a home that tells your story and that of your home.

This is the element that is missing in the home design industry. The actual tools needed to make intentional decisions for your home. It is okay to feel uninformed and unsure, but it really is easier than you may think. Knowledge is power and that is what I want this blog to provide you with, the knowledge to make your house your home.

How are we going to accomplish this you ask? Well, it starts with focus and a little bit of work on both our parts. Stay tuned!

Beautiful home, beautiful style! Just wondering if you will be sharing the sources for items in your home as well as cabinets, faucets, counter tops? I love the classic/timeless appeal of your home but don’t often see anything other than trendy items in stores.

Looking forward to reading more about this!! My goal with our new house is to be intentional with telling our story through decorating…truly making it a home that is US and not just full of pretty things.

So looking forward to your future posts on this topic. I am redoing all of my rooms – going neutral with grays, whites and creams, a touch modern country, farmhouse and just incorporating other elements I like – basically starting from scratch. I often get sucked into the Pinterest blackhole which leads to indecisiveness and me questioning my choices. I want our home to be a reflection of us and not some trendy design blog. Hoping that your posts will provide me with the tools needed to be confident in my style and decor.

I am looking forward to this! I love the way you intersperse lovely photos with limited but helpful writing. It doesn’t overwhelm a person!

Thank you for this type of feedback Kim! I don’t want people to feel overwhelmed, but to feel that they can implement the tools and information that I am teaching. Take care, Melinda

This sounds wonderful!! Thank you! We purchased a fixer upper last June. Not knowing where to begin and coming from a rental home that was all white (floors, trim, and walls), I hired a designer. But his style was not mine at all. He liked modern. I like farmhouse, So I hired another one who said she loved, loved, loved the “Fixer Upper/ Joanna Gaines” style. Me, too. I thought we’d be a great fit and would be off to an amazing start. It wasn’t long before I discovered she really was more mid-century modern. There’s no problem with that other than in our professional relationship, I didn’t like many of her initially items in the ‘inspiration board. Then I would have to pay her for more of her time spent on Pinterest…which started adding up. Things began to fall apart when she practically insisted that I buy products she received a kick-back from than allow me to make it myself.
So, here I am trying to do this overwhelming job on my own. I’m literally taking a break from painting the laundry room the third color I’ve picked out. I feel defeated. My house is a mess and the laundry is piling up from me spending my days painting and repainting and making friends with the people at the paint store. And, unfortunately, with every “wrong” decision I make, my decorating budget takes a hit and another project is put on hold or re-evaluated. I wish this house came with a money tree. LOL
All this to say I know I must not be the only one out here that is in the same boat as myself. And thank you for thinking about us as your write!

I really appreciate you sharing your story with me Moriah. My hope is to teach you how to choose with intention for you and your home. What you like at first glance is not necessarily the best choice for the project. Stay tuned for more instruction and take care! Melinda
