Modern Mix by Eddie Ross

After reading Modern Mix, written by home expert Eddie Ross, I couldn’t wait to put what I had learned to use. I decided a good place to start was chapter one:  “inspire”.

My inspiration for this project came from two old marble thresholds that I discovered at our local salvage shop. They were $5 each and my future plan is to use them for open shelving in the kitchen once I collect more. Until then, I have found another use.

I have always had an interest in the art of entertaining. In Modern Mix, Eddie speaks about this art and the “creative spirit”. One way he demonstrates how to entertain in a creative way involved a cheese platter. Not just any cheese platter, mind you. One that has flair and originality.

This was the result! What do you think?

I felt that the “platter” itself was an object that was interesting because the shape was so different from a typical tray.

I referenced Eddie’s chapter titled “restore” to clean up my silver pieces. I thought the little silver box was a perfect place to hold toothpicks. The silver bread basket was a gift from my Dutch aunt and uncle and it received a nice cleaning as well.

I found this copper colored serving piece for $8 at the local thrift shop. More than I normally spend on a piece there, but I couldn’t resist!

Besides the marble being absolutely beautiful in appearance, it is a cold stone which helps to keep the cheese at a cooler temperature as well.

Cake stands are an easy way to add interest and height to any display.

Oh, one more of Eddie’s tips…burn the tips of candles before guests arrive, this way they will light up quickly when needed.

Modern Mix is a wonderful resource that I have added to my own library. It delivers a different experience that I know I will reference time and time again.

Love how you used the marble is such a simple way but at the same time it really elevates your vignette!

      Hello Suzy!

The pendant lights are actually the Martha Stewart brand. I bought them on Amazon a few years ago. I hope this helps! Take care! Melinda

I love these ideas, Melinda… thank you so much for sharing. Creating a unique and gorgeous cheese tray is on my list of things to do and share on my blog. I love how having a blog inspires and motivates you to try things you want to do but may have never done otherwise, don’t you? That copper piece is absolutely gorgeous, by the way. Thanks for sharing what is inspiring you.
