I have been where you are, standing in the pillow aisle of a store I frequent often, feeling overwhelmed by the choices and questioning my decisions. Looking at shelves full of coffee canisters and wondering which one I should place on my counter. I have even been to the point of having a difficult time picking out something as simple as a tea towel for my kitchen. In my head I would have a conversation with myself trying to make a decision, “I think this is the pattern everyone is buying, so maybe I should choose one of these five tea towels” or “I think I saw this in the latest issue of some magazine as a top pick, so maybe I should go with that one”.
I have been inspired (and overwhelmed) by all sorts of imagery for years. I felt like I would love a particular style, but not know where to start or if it would even look right in my home. There were many times when I purchased the trendy pillow just to bring it home and have it look out of place.
I know not everyone is like this and some people don’t put that much thought into their homes, and that is completely fine. I also know some people always seem to get it right the first time and make it look so easy, but that wasn’t me either. I fell into this middle group that cared a lot about my home, but I also wasn’t trained professionally in the area of design. I was the everyday home designer who wanted to connect my story to my home, and thought there has to be a better way. So, I decided to get to work.
I created a framework and tools that will help create a feeling in your home. It is one that I use with my own clients and it is what want to teach you here. The end result will have your home feeling more like you because it is you.
If you are interested in joining me on this journey grab a notebook, a pencil, and let’s get to work. We are going to start with asking ourselves one question, why. Why is it important for you to make a feeling in your home? Why are you drawn to me and this blog? Why are you wanting to join me on this journey?
I would love to read and share some of your responses to these questions on my blog and an online class that I will be teaching, so please comment below! The course will be available to register for on August 1, 2016 and is all about teaching you the process and tools on specifically creating a timeless feeling in your home. Please be sure to subscribe to my blog below if you want to learn more about the course! All images by Lori Baskin Photography.

I want my home to have the pulled together look I have never been able to achieve. I want my family to feel safe, comfortable and peaceful. I see that in your home, but how do I get it in my home? I definitely have no interior design talent and I’m afraid to spend money and just end up being disappointed.
I’m hoping to find some fresh ways of looking at my tired house.
I have fought the same feelings you describe. When I see a beautifully designed room I can forget what I’m trying to achieve for my own home and find myself thinking ‘I like this, maybe I’ll get one of those for my house’ only to be disappointed that it doesn’t work for me. I’ve only recently begun to recognize my style and that makes setting goals for my home much easier. Your message will reinforce the skills I need to stay the course.

Adore your house! I need a cohesive whole house plan instead of room by room. So excited for what you will share.
I love when I enter someones home and it immediately feels warm and welcoming. I am slowly redoing my home in the hopes of achieving that same feeling, but I get overwhelmed not only by all of the choices available for home decor, but also by all of the styles. Even though I am going in the direction of modern farmhouse with lots of grays, whites and warm woods, I still find it difficult to stay with that style because I am drawn to so many beautiful accessories. I don’t want to agonize over every little detail, nor do I want to ask myself if bloggers I follow would put an item I like in their home. I think having confidence and giving myself permission to decorate with what I love are two goals I am slowly trying to reach, but it has been and still is very difficult.
When my house feels unsettled, I feel unsettled. When it doesn’t come together, neither do I. I know styles I like when I see them but can’t figure out how to bring that into my home. There are days I don’t think I have a creative bone in my body, but I know what makes me feel calm when I see it in a photo.. On the other hand, I am not all one style. I like a mix of modern/traditional with antiques but what is that? I think the classes you are describing sound very interesting and I like your simple style.
I feel the same way as you describe yourself and the seemingly endless choices of things to bring into your home. I have done that so often and although my choice wasn’t “bad”, it was less than I had hoped for. I want tranquility when I see things in my home with practicality and beauty thrown in, too! I see that when I see your home in the photos you post….that is what I want!
Good morning Dee! That is what my aim is for this blog. I will be teaching an online course on just this as well with registration starting August 1. It may be something you are interested in as well. Thank you for following along! Take care, Melinda
